The New Eating Out – Five Trends

Hospitality venues across the UK have finally opened for indoor dining but how have customers’ needs changed and what’s around the corner for eating out?

One of the most exciting things to know is that consumers are planning to eat out even more in 2021, compared with 2019. Great news for restaurants!

We’ve handpicked a few trends for you to keep an eye on.

But first thing’s first, here’s a recap on the latest rules in England:

Indoor Dining Rules Recap

  1. Groups of up to six, or two households of any size, are allowed inside

  2. Groups seated outside may have up to 30 people

  3. People still need to order, eat and drink while seated, where alcohol is served

  4. When not seated customers must wear face coverings

  5. Social distancing between groups is encouraged

  6. Capacity is restricted to what is possible with social distancing and table service

Consumers are planning to eat out more!

Being stuck in lockdown has increased everyone’s appetites for eating out, so 2021 is looking to be a busy one for UK hospitality.

39% of Brits are planning to eat out more compared with 2019, according to CGA.

This will increase even more with the anticipated boom in UK Staycationers.

Neighbourhood restaurants

The pandemic has pushed people to develop new, intimate relationship with their local restaurants.

With the Monday to Friday office week unlikely to return this year, restaurants have a great opportunity to attract more locals.

So make the most of Google my Business and social media to advertise your business.

Fine Dining is Making a Comeback

After overindulging on takeaways and home-cooking for a year, and missing multiple special occasions, consumers are ready to treat themselves to a finer dining experience when eating out.

Let’s face it, we have a lot of catching up to do!

Social Responsibility

Looking after the planet is more important than ever before. Use biodegradable cutlery and packaging where possible, and include plenty of vegan and veggie products on your menu.

Be sure to highlight your eco-credentials on marketing materials and menus for customers to see. Search ‘vegan’, ‘vegetarian’ or ‘bio packaging’ on the JJ website for our latest ranges.

Quality, Service and Safety

Food quality, service and safety were ranked the three most important things that people look for when deciding where to dine, according to research from Aviko.

An increasing number of restaurants and pubs are starting to use QR codes, allowing orders and payments to be made online with zero contact, even when dining in.

The government hopes to lift all restrictions from 21 June.
